I love this light box. I have suffered from SAD for years but it had been just about manageable as I worked nights and was able to get out for walks during the day which helped. I then completely changed my job and lifestyle and was feeling fantastic until the days began to shorten and I was driving to and from work in the dark and unable to get out in the natural light. My mood rapidly went down hill and it took all my will power just to get out of bed in the morning, I felt physically and mentally exhausted, i just wanted to hibernate for 6 months (DO NOT DISTURB!!!!) I was miserable and my doctor recommended I try a light box, I chose this one because it was small and portable and not too expensive, I noticed a difference within a few days. I use it for half an hour every day from September to approx the end of March and wouldn’t be without it now!! My next purchase is a body clock to help me get up, as this is still a huge problem, but at least I know using my light box at breakfast well make me feel much better.

I would recommend this product without hesitation!!

    Good luck

Ps A friend of mine used it for a week to help combat jetlag and was very impressed. No task too big for this little gem!!

Good so far – but a bit directionally challenged, 6 Nov 2010

I’ve only been using this for a couple of days, so am still sceptical about the whole lightbox effect thing. That said, I do seem to be a bit perkier in this rather gloomy part of the year (November). I’ll update when I’ve been using it a while.

First impressions then. It’s a simple, well-designed little light. Slightly smaller than an average paperback book when folded up. The display is simple and functional, and the light on and off is easy to operate, as is the timer. The light turns on and off with a very pleasant cinema lighting fade up and down, which is very welcome considering how bright it gets. I’ve used it for an hour in total so far off the battery, an it’s still reading as best part full. The kickstand is a bit flimsy, and I have some doubts about how long it’ll last unless one is very careful with it. I think that’s due partly of it being made of a very flexible material, and partly of it being quite stiff to open. Something that I regard as a bit of a design faux pas in an otherwise well designed product.

The light itself is very bright indeed, which is kind of the point. Not comfortable to stare into, as I did at first. So definitely worth reading the manual before use, which does state that it’s not a good idea to stare straight at it! An observation about the light pattern that I have, is that it is extremely directional – to the same extent as looking at a cash machine screen, or really old laptop screen. I’m not sure whether this is a good thing or not. On one hand, it won’t blind anyone else sitting next to you, so is ideal in an office environment where you don’t want to affect anyone else. On the other hand though, it means you do have to have it positioned “just right” to get the full effect, and if you’re off centre at all, the drop-off of light intensity is rapid – to the point where it can feel much brighter in one eye than the other. I’ve tried to attach a pic which demonstrates the light pattern; it’s projected on a wall at 50 cm distance (the recommended distance use), that oval of light is approximately 20 cm wide, so only marginally wider than a pair of spectacles.

So, at this point the one-star drop is for the flimsy kickstand that is pretty likely to break even with careful handling, and for the directionality of the light (as I’m not sure it’s a “good thing”).

    January update:
I’ve just docked it another star. The rather severe directionality of the Zip is really quite annoying having trialled it for a few months now. Feels rather like you have to sit still and not move whilst using it to get the full benefit.

My best friend in the fight against “winter depression”. Pros: Small, portable, rechargeable battery, timer. Efficient,I felt improvement after a few days. Cons: Does not double as a desk lamp, as other SAD lights do.
Overall highly recommendable. I love my Lumie!
